Tension at Gatuanyaga Primary as Parents Protest Over Teacher Accused of Assaulting Pupil
Tension gripped Gatuanyaga Primary School in Thika East after angry parents staged a protest outside the school, demanding action against a female teacher accused of assaulting a pupil.
According to the parents, the teacher allegedly physically assaulted the learner, leaving her with bruises and bite marks. They further alleged that the teacher inappropriately touched the pupil and assaulted her after the child resisted.
The incident sparked outrage among parents, who gathered outside the school to condemn the alleged assault and demand the teacher's immediate removal from the institution.
The teacher was reportedly absent from school on the day of the protest. Parents called on the Ministry of Education, the area Director of Education and the Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) to intervene, investigate the matter thoroughly and facilitate the teacher's transfer from the school.
"We want the relevant authorities to act swiftly and ensure our children are learning in a safe environment. We will not remain silent when the safety of our children is at stake," one of the parents said.
The area Officer Commanding Station (OCS) confirmed that the teacher had been arrested and was expected to be arraigned in court as investigations continue.
"The suspect has been arrested and will be presented before court as investigations continue. We are handling the matter and all complaints will be thoroughly investigated to ensure justice is served," the OCS said.
Parents have warned that they will stage a peaceful protest on Monday if no action is taken by the relevant authorities. Police have launched investigations into the allegations.
The allegations remain under investigation and the teacher is presumed innocent and entitled to due process as the matter proceeds through the justice system.
