Taxi Driver Arrested for Stealing KSh500,000 from Client in Lavington

Taxi driver arrested by DCI in Lavington after allegedly stealing KSh500,000 from a client.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a taxi driver accused of stealing more than KSh500,000 from a client in Nairobi’s Lavington area.

The suspect, identified as Fred Atandi Morara, was apprehended on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, following an intensive probe that linked him to the theft.

According to investigators, the incident occurred on the night of August 8, 2025. The victim, accompanied by a friend, was leaving a social joint when Morara approached them, offering a cheaper ride to their Airbnb compared to regular online cab services. The unsuspecting clients accepted his offer.

After safely dropping them off, Morara allegedly made away with the victim’s phone and used it to siphon over half a million shillings from mobile money accounts. He is said to have deactivated the victim’s accounts to frustrate tracing efforts.

During his arrest, detectives intercepted the suspect driving a Mazda Demio fitted with suspected fake number plates, KDQ 810B, with an alternative set, KDN 993Q, hidden in the car. Several mobile phones, multiple SIM cards, and a sisal rope were also recovered as exhibits.

The suspect is currently in police custody and has been handed over to DCI Dagoretti for further investigations.
