Court Grants Bond to Student in Ksh.11 Million Cyber Fraud Case

University student accused of a Ksh.11 million cyber fraud targeting a betting firm appears in court alongside investigators.

A university student, Seth Mwabe Okwanyo, who stands accused of orchestrating a Ksh.11 million cyber fraud targeting a betting platform, has been granted bond and released under strict court conditions.

At the Milimani Law Courts, Magistrate Ben Mark Ekubi dismissed the prosecution’s request to continue holding the suspect, noting that they had failed to provide sufficient justification for further detention. The magistrate cautioned Okwanyo against interfering with the ongoing investigations and directed him to report to the investigating officer on a weekly basis.

The court released Okwanyo on a Ksh. 500,000 bond, stressing that while the allegations are serious, the prosecution had not met the threshold to deny him his freedom at this stage. The student is accused of playing a central role in executing a cyber fraud scheme directed at a betting firm, in which millions of shillings are alleged to have been siphoned fraudulently.

The case will continue under judicial oversight, with Okwanyo barred from tampering with evidence or contacting potential witnesses as investigations proceed.
