Kindiki’s KSh1.2B Power, Health & Roads Push to Transform Tharaka Nithi

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki addresses over 3,500 women opinion leaders in Tharaka Nithi County on August 13, 2025, where he announced a KSh1.2 billion plan for electrification, hospital upgrades, and road projects.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has unveiled an ambitious KSh1.2 billion development plan for Tharaka Nithi County, targeting electrification, healthcare improvement, and stalled road projects.

Speaking on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, during a meeting with more than 3,500 women opinion leaders from the county, Kindiki said the government is determined to bring Tharaka Nithi’s infrastructure and services on par with other parts of the country.

Power Connectivity Boost
The Deputy President announced that the national government will inject KSh1.2 billion into electricity expansion programs across the county. He noted that the funding will ensure more households are connected to the national grid, complementing ongoing Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) projects.

“Our target is to ensure every household in Tharaka Nithi has access to electricity, unlocking economic opportunities and improving livelihoods,” Kindiki said.

Hospital Upgrades and Critical Care
Kindiki also promised that all Level 2 to Level 4 hospitals in the county will receive modern equipment to enhance service delivery. Additionally, Meru Referral Hospital serving Tharaka Nithi and surrounding counties will be upgraded to Level 6 status to provide advanced critical care services.

Road Projects Back on Track
Several road projects stalled in recent years due to economic challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic will now be fast-tracked. Key among them are:

  • Chogoria–Weru Road

  • Keria–Magutuni–Kathwana Road

  • Kibugua–Itugururu–Ishiara Road

  • Kaanwa–Mariani–Kamutiria Road

“These roads are vital for trade, healthcare access, and social mobility. We will ensure they are completed without further delay,” Kindiki assured.

Empowerment and Political Remarks
The Deputy President urged women leaders to steer the youth away from political incitement and violence, encouraging them instead to take advantage of government programs for economic empowerment.

He also took a swipe at his predecessor, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of arrogance and neglect of duty before his removal from office.

The pledges come amid a wider national agenda to achieve 100% electricity coverage by 2030 and to strengthen healthcare and infrastructure as pillars of economic transformation.
