Grief has struck residents of Gathukiini
village of in Kiharu Constituency following the brutal murder of a 54-year-old
woman.
According to neighbours, Purity
Rwamba was allegedly killed by her ex-lover who repeatedly hit her with a blunt
object.
She is said to have just left the house where she was
working as a domestic worker, before her assailant pounced on her from his
hideout, hitting her at the back of her head in the full glare of her two sons.
He is said to have threatened the kids before telling them
to go and report to their relatives about the murder.
Her employer, Emily Wangari Muraguri, was among the first
people to arrive at the scene of murder.
She described the deceased as a humble and peace loving
woman and wondered why someone would take away her life. She added that the suspect,
a Mr. Mureithi from Kirinyaga County, had been introduced to her by the victim
as her husband.
She admitted that their relationship was not very cordial
and the two used to disagree often as the man kept claiming that the deceased
owed him some money. He is said to have previously threatened to kill her, an
issue that had already been reported to the area chief.
The deceased’s daughter Catherine Mukami narrated how they
had supper together as a family and bid each other goodnight only for her to
receive the bad news in a short while later.
Mukami appealed to the security agents to apprehend the
suspect and ensure that he was brought to book.
Robert Kibebe, who had at one time had employed the suspect,
described him as hot tempered and admitted to the knowledge of the couple’s
marital differences.
He lamented that insecurity in the area had escalated citing
a recent case where another woman was raped and killed.
“We are calling for the police to beef up security as we
have so many cases of petty crimes here. Just prior to that incident, an
elderly man was also sodomized and killed,” he said.
Area Assistant chief Peter Muhia said that the suspect was
still at large but the police were doing everything possible to apprehend him. He
appealed to the residents to volunteer any important information that may lead
to his arrest.
