Scores injured in early morning accident at Witeithie.

Two of the vehicles that were involved in an accident near Witeithie Estate on Monday morning.
Three people were this morning seriously injured and several others slightly injured when a trailer rammed into several matatus at Witeithie stage in Juja along the Thika Superhighway.

According to eyewitness accounts, the trailer rammed onto several matatus which were collecting passengers on the edge of the road, dragging them several metres away.

“I was offloading cakes from one of the matatus packed at the stage when I heard a loud bang. The trailer hit one of the matatus from the rear, pushing it forward and subsequently hitting other vehicles,” said Joseph Kibe, a tout operating at the bus stop.

Joshua Mwangi said that the impact of the bang dragged the 14-seater matatus, extensively damaging some of them and injuring commuters who were aboard the affected matatus.

He added that, in the ensuing confusion, the driver of the truck jumped from the moving vehicle and escaped.

A woman who was supplying cakes had her leg crushed. Two other men sustained serious head and chest injuries and were rushed to Thika Level Five Hospital.

The accident that occurred around 7am caused a heavy jam which lasted for about two hours.

The wreckage are currently detained at the Juja Police Station.
