Kenya is stepping up efforts to strengthen its pharmaceutical sector as part of a broader strategy to become a regional centre for medicine production, health innovation and medical supply chains.
Speaking during the meeting of Africa Initiative for Medical Access and Manufacturing (AIM2030) ahead of the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, President William Ruto said the government is taking deliberate measures to boost local pharmaceutical manufacturing and improve access to quality healthcare products across Africa.
The President said one of the key steps includes strengthening the country’s National Regulatory Authority to attain World Health Organization Maturity Level 3 certification. He noted that the move will increase international trust in the quality, safety and effectiveness of medicines manufactured in Kenya.
According to Ruto, Kenya’s ambition is to establish itself as a leading pharmaceutical production hub serving both local demand and the wider African market. He cited the country’s strategic location as the gateway to Eastern Africa, alongside its growing economy, robust domestic market, advanced logistics systems and attractive investment climate.
The Head of State also urged African governments to fully implement commitments on regulatory harmonisation, market integration and industrial policy, saying these measures are critical to unlocking the continent’s manufacturing potential and reducing reliance on imported medical products.
The discussions form part of ongoing preparations for the Africa Forward Summit, which is expected to bring together leaders, policymakers and investors to explore solutions for accelerating Africa’s economic growth and industrial transformation.
