Mount Kenya University Launches Advanced Humanoid Robot for AI Innovation
Mount Kenya University has unveiled a state-of-the-art educational humanoid robot, marking a major step in strengthening Artificial Intelligence (AI) training and research at the institution.
According to Dr. John Kamau, the Dean of the School of Computing and Informatics, the robot will give students hands-on experience in developing and testing new algorithms, learning languages and training the machine to perform complex tasks. He said the Walker E Educational Humanoid Robot will bridge the gap between theory and real-world application, supporting undergraduate learning, postgraduate research, capstone projects and various technical programmes.
The robot was unveiled at the university’s Thika main campus by MKU Founder and Chairman, Prof. Simon Gicharu, who emphasised that embracing AI is essential for boosting innovation, enhancing efficiency and empowering students with future-ready skills.
MKU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi, noted that the university has embarked on an ambitious AI-centered transformation, rolling out new academic programmes and adopting AI-driven approaches to teaching and learning. He added that the new humanoid robot is part of MKU’s renewed strategic plan, which positions AI at the core of academic delivery.
Prof. Jaganyi said the robot will promote “learning by doing,” a method he described as highly effective for students in fields such as Computer Science and Data Science. He further revealed that MKU has revamped all its academic programmes to align with emerging technologies, ensuring graduates remain competitive globally.
“The University Board of Management is committed to equipping students with the latest technology to support teaching and research. The institution has also introduced 13 new and revised programmes, including flagship degrees in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. All curricula, he noted, will integrate AI to enhance learning outcomes and equip students with skills demanded in the job market,” he said.
Prof. Gicharu reaffirmed the university’s commitment to becoming a global leader in education, research and innovation. He said AI is no longer a distant concept but a necessary investment for institutions seeking to keep pace with global advancements.
During the event, Prof. Gicharu also commissioned a new fully equipped ambulance, a dental skills lab, engineering equipment, and additional library books. He urged students to take full advantage of the new resources, saying they open “limitless opportunities” for their future careers.
“You stand at the frontier of a new era. With AI, you can innovate and transform lives. Unlike our time of makeshift laboratories, you now have everything you can see and touch,” he told the students.
Student leaders Joy Watiri and Clifford Musyoka welcomed the new equipment, saying it will enrich their practical training and help them develop industry-ready skills.
Musyoka added that the tools will support them in turning innovative ideas into real-world solutions.
