Mount Kenya University (MKU) has unveiled its Annual Alumni Awards, a flagship initiative to honour graduates making outstanding contributions in their professions and communities.

With a top prize of USD 50,000 (Ksh. 6.4 million), the awards aim to celebrate success, inspire changemakers and strengthen alumni engagement.

The awards will recognise excellence across categories including professional achievement, public service, community impact, innovation, entrepreneurship and global influence.

Speaking during the launch, MKU Director of Alumni Relations, Ms. Virginiah Musawa, said the initiative reflects the university’s commitment to nurturing possibility and honoring the role of alumni in driving change.

“Alumni are not just our past. They are our present and future. Every award, every reunion, every engagement honors that truth,” she said.

MKU has emerged as a regional leader in alumni relations, combining recognition with empowerment initiatives. Its alumni webinars, covering topics from leadership in the digital age to workplace wellness, have provided mentorship and networking opportunities for graduates worldwide.

The university recently hosted a Champions Region Alumni Reunion in Eldoret, bringing together former students from Eldoret and Kitale campuses.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi lauded the alumni as “champions of change, integrity and innovation” and urged them to give back through mentorship, internships and scholarships.

With more than 100,000 alumni across the globe, MKU’s graduates continue to influence sectors from corporate boardrooms to grassroots initiatives. Notable voices at the reunion, including keynote speaker Ms. Mercy Wanjiru of the Kenya Private Schools Association, described the gathering as “a homecoming and celebration of who we were, who we’ve become, and who we’re yet to be.”

University leaders reaffirmed their commitment to empowering alumni while encouraging graduates to support current students through opportunities and mentorship.

The reunion, attended by Uasin Gishu Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii’s representative, county leaders, and university officials, underscored the strength of the MKU alumni community.

With the launch of the awards, MKU has set a new benchmark for alumni engagement, reinforcing its motto: Unlocking Infinite Possibilities.
