Government to Hire 20,000 Teachers by January 2026, Ruto Announces
President William Ruto has announced that the government will hire more than 20,000 teachers by January 2026 in a bid to improve the teacher-to-student ratio across the country.
Speaking during a meeting with teachers at State House, Nairobi, the Head of State emphasized that education remains at the center of his administration’s agenda. He said the move is aimed at easing the workload on existing teachers while ensuring that learners receive quality attention in line with the government’s commitment to improve learning outcomes.
“This government is committed to ensuring that no child is left behind because of overcrowded classrooms or a lack of teachers. By January 2026, we will have deployed over 20,000 additional teachers to schools across the country,” Ruto said.
The President acknowledged the challenges faced in the education sector, including congestion in classrooms and understaffing in public schools. He assured teachers that the government will continue to prioritize investment in human resources alongside the ongoing school infrastructure projects.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is expected to oversee the recruitment process, which will focus on both primary and secondary school teachers to meet the rising demand.
Education stakeholders welcomed the announcement, noting that the new hires will not only bridge the gap in staffing but also enhance performance in schools.
If fully implemented, this will mark one of the largest single recruitment drives in the education sector in recent years.
