MKU Hosts Champions Region Alumni Reunion in Eldoret

Mount Kenya University (MKU) hosted a high-level alumni reunion in Eldoret City, bringing together former students from its Eldoret Campus and Kitale Centre for the first physical gathering of the “Champions Region” alumni.

Congratulating the alumni, MKU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi hailed the event as a milestone for a vibrant community that is now becoming intentionally connected and future-focused.

“You are champions, in your careers, in creating change and in upholding MKU’s values of integrity, excellence, inclusivity, teamwork and innovation,” said Prof. Jaganyi.

He noted that with over 100,000 alumni globally, the MKU alumni network is a powerful reservoir of talent, experience, and stories that can uplift the university and society. He praised the Alumni Directorate for its role in building strong links between the university and its graduates.

Prof. Jaganyi urged alumni to give back through mentorship, internships, employment opportunities, and support for scholarships, research, and campus development.

“Volunteer your time, whether through events, advisory roles or mentorship. By doing so, you empower others and ensure MKU continues to thrive as a hub of innovation and learning,” he added.

To recognise alumni excellence, the university has set aside Ksh. 5 million for a new annual award that will honour an MKU graduate making a significant impact in the community. Nominations open in the coming weeks, with the first award to be presented in December 2025.

Dr. Emily Kirwok, Director of MKU Eldoret Campus and Chair of the Champions Cluster, emphasised the reunion’s core goals: reflection, reconnection, and inspiring alumni to support current students.

“As an institution that mentored you, we now turn to you to help mentor the next generation,” she said.

Held under the theme “Together Again: Honouring the Past, Building the Future,” the event served as both a celebration and a call to action.

Keynote speaker Mercy Wanjiru, Regional Coordinator of the Kenya Private Schools Association (North Rift) and a proud MKU alumna, called the event “a homecoming.” An MBA and BBM graduate, she credited MKU for instilling grit, ambition, and a bold vision for the future.

“We’re part of a powerful network of professionals and leaders bound by a shared identity — MKU. Let’s use that bond to uplift current students through mentorship and industry exposure,” she urged.

Wanjiru applauded the university’s leadership and affirmed alumni commitment to giving back through various platforms.

Director of Alumni Relations Virginia Musawa thanked the alumni for keeping the MKU spirit alive.

“MKU is not just an institution, it’s a lifelong community,” she said.

She encouraged continued involvement through mentorship, webinars, reunions, and career guidance initiatives.

Musawa also emphasised plans to strengthen the Kitale–Eldoret alumni network into a collaborative and impactful force.

“You are our brand ambassadors and partners in change,” she told the alumni.

The event underscored the vital role alumni play as leaders in business, healthcare, education, public service, and innovation. Their contributions through mentorship and outreach continue to enhance MKU’s national and global impact.

Among those in attendance were Uasin Gishu Governor Hon. Dr. Jonathan Bii (represented by County Attorney Mr. Silvester Metto), former MKU Council Chair Prof. David Serem, university leaders and alumni representatives. The dignitaries acknowledged the alumni's loyalty and their crucial role as ambassadors of the institution.

As MKU continues its mission to educate, connect and inspire, its alumni community stands as a testament to the power of lasting bonds and the promise of building a brighter future together.
