Who Was KK Mwenyewe? Facts About the Late Kenyan Comedy Star

Kenya is mourning the loss of celebrated online comedian Zakaria Kariuki, famously known as KK Mwenyewe, who passed away on Monday, July 15, 2025, at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital after a short illness.

The 23-year-old had become a household name for his sharp political satire and relatable comedic skits that resonated with millions of Kenyans.

Early Life and Education

Zakaria Kariuki hailed from Limuru in Kiambu County. He was a student at Kisii University, pursuing Bachelor of Arts. His academic interest in politics would later blend seamlessly with his comedy, especially through his impersonations of political figures.

Personal Life

KK Mwenyewe was not married and had no children. Friends described him as down-to-earth, focused, and passionate about both his education and his craft.

Rise to National Fame

KK Mwenyewe’s rise to national stardom came in 2022, during the early months of the Kenya Kwanza administration. His breakthrough came from his uncannily accurate impersonation of then Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, a role that earned him national recognition and the nickname “Riggy G”, which he popularised and which was eventually embraced by Gachagua himself.

With pinpoint accuracy, KK captured Gachagua’s distinctive speech patterns, gestures, and signature phrases, turning them into comedic gold. His content went viral on platforms like TikTok, where he amassed over 1.1 million followers and on Facebook where he had over 412,000 followers.

Beyond political satire, KK showcased remarkable range by portraying multiple characters such as the “Silent Lecturer,” a Pastor and the lively co-character “Kafengu” in recurring skits. His comedy delved into school life, romantic relationships, campus experiences and the quirks of everyday Kenyan life, all delivered with brilliant timing and relatable humor.

Public Support and Achievements

In 2022, his financial challenges became public when he appealed for help to pay his university fees. In a remarkable show of support, his fans raised over KSh 500,000, allowing him to continue his studies. His appeal also attracted the attention of national leaders who offered to support him.

KK’s online influence made him a pioneer of Kenya’s new generation of content creators — young, witty, and unafraid to blend satire with societal critique.

Untimely Death

The young comedian’s life was tragically cut short when he succumbed to a short illness while receiving care at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital. News of his death has sent shockwaves across the nation, with fans, fellow creatives and public figures expressing deep sorrow at the loss of such a promising talent.

Legacy

KK Mwenyewe leaves behind a legacy of creativity, authenticity, and resilience. His work not only entertained but also challenged societal norms and offered young Kenyans a voice through humor.

At just 23 years old, he proved that content creation could be intelligent, humorous, and impactful — and that even with limited resources, talent could shine across the nation.

May Zakaria “KK Mwenyewe” Kariuki rest in peace. His laughter lives on.
