Cabinet approves the Thika-Githunguri Water Supply and Sanitation Improvement Project
President William Ruto on Tuesday 21st January, chaired the first Cabinet meeting of 2025 at State Lodge, Kakamega, urging his Cabinet to seize the unique opportunity presented by the broad-based government to drive transformative change in Kenya.
In line with the commitment to streamline government
operations, reduce waste, and curb excesses, the Cabinet approved a series of recommendations
aimed at reforming State Corporations.
The reforms will address operational and financial
inefficiencies, enhance service delivery, and reduce reliance on the Exchequer.
Approval was also given for the restructuring strategy of
Rift Valley Textiles (Rivatex) and the onboarding of non-equity strategic
partners to revitalize the company.
The Cabinet also approved the following:
• Thika and Githunguri Water Supply and Sanitation
Improvement Project
• Kenya’s Ratification of the Inter-African Coffee
Organisation New Treaty
• In-service Training Programs in the Public Service
The Thika-Githunguri Water and Sanitation Improvement
Project is a project funded by DANIDA at a tune of about KES. 12 billion.
When complete, the project will add an extra 36,000m³ (36 million
litres) of water per day, bringing the Thika Water & Sewerage Company’s (THIWASCO) daily water supply to about 65
million litres per day against the current supply of 39 million litres per day.
The project also involves the construction of 3 sewerage
plants at Pilot, Nanga and Kilimambogo to increase sewerage connection by 7,000m³
(7 million litres) of sewer collection per day.
Under this project, THIWASCO plans to tap water at the junction of the Kiama and Thika Rivers in
Murang’a County.
This DANIDA project is currently at preparation stage and was initially expected to be complete by this year.
The THIWASCO Board Chairman Mr. Maina Ruo says the board is excited with the development and looks forward at the earliest opportunity that the project will commence after clearance by the Attorney General's office.
The completion of the development project with our DANIDA will be a great improvement in the delivery of services to our Customers within our Thika area of mandate by WASREB.
Currently, THIWASCO’s main water sources are Chania River, which
supplies 20,000m³ per day and Thika River that supplies 16,000m³ per day. Others
are the five boreholes at Kilimambogo, Salama, Gatuanyaga, Matathia and
Maryhill.
