List of Hospitals where Kiambu mothers can get free maternity care.

Did you know that all expectant women in Kenya are supposed to get free National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) cover for their maternity expenses as well as their family members’ medical costs?

The Government, through the Ministry of Health, last October launched the expanded free maternal care programme dubbed ‘Linda Mama Boresha Jamii’ in a bid to achieve universal access to quality maternal healthcare as well as reduce maternal morbidity and mortality rates in the country, particularly in the rural areas.

For a pregnant woman to enjoy these services, they are required to produce their national identification card (ID) for registration, a guardian’s identification card or use of antenatal care records for pregnant women under 18 years.

Registration of beneficiaries can be done through mobile phone platform with USSD by dialling *263# and filing in one’s details on the online registration form, contracted healthcare providers, NHIF service centres or online portal-www.nhif.or.ke/healthinsurance/registeronline/ and Huduma Centres countrywide.

The following is the list of hospitals in Kiambu County where one can access the Linda Mama services;-

Under the programme, all pregnant women can access antenatal, delivery and postnatal care free of charge in all public, some faith based and private healthcare facilities nation-wide.

The redesigned initiative expands the network of health providers to include faith based facilities through a direct re-imbursement mechanism that pays for number of deliveries reported, to a health insurance plan to be administered by NHIF.

The benefit package includes both outpatient and inpatient services for the mother and newborn for a period of one year and includes Antenatal Care, Delivery, Postnatal Care and Emergency referrals for pregnancy related conditions as well as complications.

The NHIF cover is intended to reduce maternal deaths and help to achieve universal health care. The Jubilee government introduced free maternity services in June 2013.

Before then, an estimated 60% of women were delivering at home — attributable to financial constraints due to high medical costs out of reach for the poor. This resulted in 6,000 deaths of mothers every year on account of preventable complications during pregnancy or during child birth.
