Thika Plays Host To Athletics Kenya 3rd Edition.
Thika Sub-County Stadium is hosting the 3rd
Edition of the Athletics Kenya (AK) Premium Track & Field Competition.
Speaking to the press yesterday, AK Central region chairman Mr.
David Miano, said the two-day event that ends today (Saturday) will feature all
track and field events adding that the event was open to everyone.
“We are calling upon athletes in this region to show up for
the event. This is a great opportunity for young and upcoming athletes to
showcase their talents. For the established ones, they will be presented with
the opportunity to prepare for the four big upcoming athletics events,” said
Miano.
Miano said that registration was free and was a good forum
for the youth to get exposed to major competitions.
“We shall be having track races ranging 100m to 10,000m and
field events including javelin, high jump, triple jump and discus. Teachers and
schools have already registered their athletes in the youth category,” he said.
He added that the move to include youth competitions
reflected AK’s effort to come up with possible athletes for the 2017 IAAF
under-18 championships that had been scheduled for July next year in Nairobi.
He said that this competition was part of the 6 series per
year and was paramount in their athletics calendar.
He was overwhelmed by the number of athletes who turned up
on the first day saying that this was a clear indication of the passion for the
game in the region.
Otherwise, he lamented the lack of spectators in the field
urging them to come on Saturday (today) to cheer the athletes as they competed.
Some of the institutions who presented their athletes on Day 1
of the competition included Kenyatta University, NYS, Kenya Police, Kenya
Prisons, KDF, Posta among others.
The Thika fete comes just after the one held in Mumias last
weekend which was preceded by Bondo the previous weekend. After Thika, AK will
head to Nakuru (March 18-19), Kisii (April 1-2) and Eldoret (April 14-15).
