18 injured, one very serious as a Joy Kenya bus overturned along Thika Road.

The scene of the accident at Kenyatta Rd. where 18 people were injured in a crash involving a Joy Kenya bus on Monday afternoon.

18 people were rushed to various hospitals in Ruiru and Gatundu, with one later transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) with serious spine injuries after a Joy Kenya bus veered off the road and overturned near the junction of Kenyatta Road and Thika Superhighway in Juja.

According to Juja OCPD Patrick Manyasi, the bus, which was heading to Thika, hit a pavement along the service lane of the superhighway before it overturned and landed in a ditch.

9 of the patients sustained multiple injuries and are being treated at Gatundu Level 5 Hospital, with other 5 others being nursed at Ruiru Level 4 Hospital. The victim who was rushed to KNH had been taken to Thika level 5 Hospital but later referred to KNH after it emerged that his case was serious.

The driver of the ill-fated bus KCB 812F is said to have fled the scene immediately after the accident and police have launched his manhunt.

Preliminary eyewitness reports indicated that the bus could have developed some mechanical problems prior to the incident which prompted the driver to attempt to drive it off the main highway into the service lane.

One of the passenger who escaped unscathed said that they realised that the bus had developed some mechanical hitch as it drove towards the scene of accident and as they turned to join the Kenyatta road service lane, the driver lost control of the vehicle.

“It suddenly veered off the road and hit the side pavement, prompting it to overturn and land into a ditch,” he said.

Manyasi has said that the police have launched investigations to establish the real cause of the accident adding that the vehicle is even set to have an inspection tomorrow.
