KRA Warns Taxpayers of Penalties as June 30 Tax Filing Deadline Nears

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has urged taxpayers to file their 2025 Income Tax Returns before the June 30, 2026 deadline, warning that failure to comply could result in default tax assessments and additional financial penalties.
In a notice to taxpayers, KRA stated that individuals and businesses that do not submit their returns on time risk having their income and tax obligations estimated by the authority. These estimates, known as default tax assessments, may result in taxpayers being required to pay taxes based on KRA's projections rather than their actual declared earnings.
The tax authority cautioned that default assessments could also attract penalties and interest charges, increasing the amount owed by affected taxpayers.
KRA has encouraged all eligible taxpayers, including those with nil returns, to file through the iTax system before the deadline to avoid enforcement measures. The authority emphasized that timely filing remains a legal obligation regardless of whether a taxpayer has taxable income or not.
As the deadline approaches, KRA is expected to intensify awareness campaigns and compliance checks to ensure more taxpayers meet their obligations. The authority has consistently stressed that voluntary compliance helps support government revenue collection and the financing of public services.
Tax experts advise taxpayers to verify their income details and supporting documents before submitting returns to avoid errors that could lead to disputes or future audits.
With only weeks remaining before the deadline, taxpayers are being urged to act early to avoid last-minute system congestion and potential penalties.
