SPORTING GIANTS: MKU Shines, Bagging Multiple Championship Titles in Grueling Seven-Month University Sports League

Mount Kenya University (MKU) has once again demonstrated its growing dominance in university sports after emerging among the top performers in the highly competitive Kenya Universities Sports Federation (KUSF) Nairobi North Conference League.

The seven-month league, which brought together some of the country’s top universities, tested athletes’ discipline, consistency, teamwork and determination across a wide range of sporting disciplines.

In a season described as one of the most competitive in recent years, MKU delivered an impressive performance that saw the institution walk away with several major awards and championship titles.

The university was named the Best Private University, Best Host University and Most Punctual University, while also finishing as the 1st Runners-Up Overall Winning University.

MKU athletes further showcased their strength by clinching championship titles in multiple disciplines including 3x3 Basketball for both men and women, Woodball men and women, Taekwondo women, Table Tennis women, Karate men, Darts men and both men’s and women’s badminton.

The university also secured second-place finishes in Basketball men, Athletics men and women, Karate women, Swimming men and women, Table Tennis men and Tennis women.

In addition, MKU athletes claimed third-place finishes in Basketball women, Football women, Hockey men, Netball women, Volleyball men, Chess men, Darts women and both men’s and women’s Scrabble.

Speaking after the competition, MKU Sports, Creative and Performing Arts Head Mr. William Luta praised the athletes, coaches and university management for their dedication throughout the season.

“This was a very competitive league. Seven months of hard work, determination, sacrifice and resilience have finally paid off. Congratulations to Mount Kenya University and to all the awardees,” said Mr. Luta, who also serves as the Secretary of the Nairobi North Conference.

He noted that the league not only showcased sporting excellence but also reflected the growing strength and competitiveness of university sports in Kenya.

“The league was more than just competition. It was a celebration of resilience, teamwork and the growing spirit of university sports in the country,” he added.

Mount Kenya University Dean of Students Dr. Emmanuel Owour also applauded the students for their outstanding performance, saying the achievement reflects the university’s continued commitment to nurturing talent both inside and outside the classroom.

Dr. Owour reaffirmed MKU’s dedication to supporting sports development as a key pillar in shaping holistic and well-rounded graduates.

The overall league title was won by Kenyatta University, while Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) finished third overall.

Other institutions also received special recognition, with Mama Ngina University College emerging as the Most Improved University, JKUAT being named the Most Disciplined University, and St. Paul’s University taking home the Best Fair Play University award.

MKU’s strong performance further cements the university’s reputation as one of Kenya’s leading institutions in nurturing sporting talent, discipline and academic excellence simultaneously.
