MKU Strikes Major China Deal Set to Transform Digital Skills and Technology Training in Africa

Mount Kenya University (MKU) has significantly expanded its international academic and industry partnerships after signing transformative cooperation agreements with leading Chinese institutions in a move aimed at accelerating digital skills development, innovation and technology transfer across Africa.

The Kenyan university signed a trilateral cooperation agreement with Zhejiang Post and Telecommunication College (ZPTC) and Nanjing Zhongxing Xinyada Information Technology Co., Ltd. (Xinyada) during a high-level ceremony held in China in May 2026.

The signing marked a major milestone in MKU’s growing global partnerships, opening a new chapter of collaboration focused on digital education, vocational excellence, industry-academia integration and sustainable development.

The ceremony brought together senior university leaders, corporate executives and institutional representatives from the three organisations, all united by a common goal of nurturing globally competitive digital talent.

Speaking during the event, MKU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi described the partnership as a strategic breakthrough that will strengthen digital transformation, innovation and skills development across Africa.

Prof. Jaganyi noted that the collaboration builds on a foundation laid in September 2024 when Xinyada first partnered with MKU, a relationship that has since evolved into a broader international consortium involving several Chinese higher learning institutions.

“What began as a partnership between two institutions has rapidly grown into a consortium of global partners committed to driving digital growth, skills development and innovation across Africa,” said Prof. Jaganyi.

He added that the initiative aligns with MKU’s role as the United Nations Academic Impact Hub Chair for Sustainable Development Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) for the 2025–2030 period.

Under the newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the three institutions will jointly collaborate in the development of international professional and vocational standards, digital curriculum development and creation of modern learning resources.

The agreement also paves the way for joint talent training programmes, staff and student exchange opportunities, internship and employment pathways as well as cloud computing platform development.

In addition, the partnership will support the China-Africa Skills Supermarket project and promote joint initiatives geared towards advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The initiatives are designed to strengthen digital capacity, bridge critical skills gaps and prepare future-ready professionals capable of thriving in a rapidly evolving technology-driven global economy.

One of the major highlights of the partnership is the establishment of a Cloud Computing Facility at MKU by Xinyada. The facility is expected to significantly boost the university’s technological infrastructure while positioning MKU as a leading African hub for digital innovation, cloud technology training and advanced ICT capacity building.

University officials noted that the trilateral collaboration presents a practical model for integrating education with industry needs, ensuring graduates acquire hands-on competencies that directly respond to emerging global technological demands.

The ceremony concluded with renewed commitment from all parties to deepen long-term cooperation capable of delivering measurable educational, economic and social impact.

Through the strategic alliance, MKU continues to strengthen its global standing while advancing its mission of promoting academic excellence, innovation and transformative international partnerships that contribute meaningfully to Africa’s digital future.

Meanwhile, MKU further expanded its Chinese partnerships after signing another Memorandum of Understanding with Suzhou Higher Vocational and Technical School during the university delegation’s visit to China earlier this month.

The new agreement will see the two institutions collaborate on advanced digital skills training with a strong focus on drone simulation technology.

The programme is expected to equip students and professionals with practical skills applicable in security, journalism, agriculture, disaster management and other emerging sectors increasingly relying on drone technology.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Prof. Jaganyi reaffirmed MKU’s commitment to strengthening industry-academia partnerships as key drivers of national and continental development.

He said the collaboration also complements MKU’s broader vision under Sustainable Development Goal 9 by promoting innovation, infrastructure development and inclusive technological growth.

Vice President Zhang Ying of Nanjing Zhongxing XinYaDa Information Technology Co., LTD, who attended the ceremony as a key facilitator of the consortium, highlighted the growing cooperation between Chinese vocational institutions and African universities.

The drone simulation programme is expected to prepare Kenyan learners for emerging labour market opportunities in areas such as aerial security surveillance, drone-assisted journalism, precision agriculture and emergency response operations.

Prof. Jaganyi emphasized that MKU remains committed to ensuring no one is left behind in Africa’s digital transformation journey.

“We believe this collaboration will create the necessary synergy to bring about digital growth across the African continent,” he said.

The latest agreements add to MKU’s growing network of Chinese partners, which already includes Nanjing Zhongxing XinYaDa, Hebei Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Technology and Nanjing Vocational College of Information Technology — all part of an expanding China-Africa skills consortium focused on innovation, technology and future-ready workforce development.
