Panic and confusion gripped residents of the Ole Nairi area in Oloolua Ward, Kajiado North, on Friday evening after an eight-floor building under construction suddenly collapsed, trapping at least four workers beneath the rubble.

According to local authorities, the section of the structure came down while construction was ongoing, sending clouds of dust into the air and prompting residents and emergency responders to rush to the scene.

Rescue operations were immediately launched as emergency teams worked against time to reach the trapped workers. Heavy machinery and rescue personnel were deployed to clear the debris carefully in an effort to avoid causing further collapse.

Oloolua Ward MCA Kombo confirmed the incident and said efforts to save those trapped were ongoing.

“We are currently trying to rescue those trapped,” Kombo said while speaking at the scene.

Witnesses described hearing a loud rumble moments before the building caved in. Some workers reportedly managed to escape before the collapse, while others remained trapped inside the debris.

The cause of the collapse has not yet been established, but concerns have once again emerged over the safety standards of buildings under construction in rapidly growing urban areas around Nairobi and Kajiado County.

Police officers, county emergency teams, and members of the public gathered at the site as rescue efforts continued late into the evening.

Authorities are expected to launch investigations into the incident, including whether the building met construction and safety regulations before work began.
