Panic gripped the University of Kabianga after a structural failure inside a lecture hall triggered a chaotic stampede, leaving several students injured.

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon at Lecture Theatre Block Four when part of the ceiling and slab reportedly gave way, sending debris crashing down near students during an ongoing class. The sudden collapse sparked fear and confusion, forcing learners to scramble for safety.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as students rushed toward exits, with some reportedly jumping from upper floors in a desperate attempt to escape after doorways became congested. The situation quickly escalated, leading to multiple injuries.

Reports indicate that at least 27 students were injured, some sustaining fractures and other serious wounds. Emergency responders moved swiftly to the scene, and the injured were rushed to nearby medical facilities, including Kericho County Referral Hospital, where they received treatment. While many were treated and discharged, a number of students were admitted in critical condition.

The university administration confirmed that falling debris from the slab triggered the panic that led to the stampede. In a statement, the institution expressed regret over the incident and praised emergency teams for their quick response.

Authorities have since launched investigations into the structural integrity of the affected building. Engineers from the State Department of Public Works have been deployed to assess the extent of the damage and determine the cause of the failure, amid growing concerns over safety standards within the institution.

The incident has sparked concern among students and the wider public, with calls for urgent inspections and improved maintenance of university infrastructure to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
