TRAGEDY: Man Found Dead After Flash Floods, Heavy Rains Wreak Havoc in Thika–Juja Region
A sombre mood has engulfed residents of Witeithie in Juja Sub-County after the body of a young man was discovered in a stream following heavy rains that pounded the area.
The tragic discovery was made in Runda area on Saturday morning, a day after a heavy downpour triggered flash floods across parts of Thika and Juja sub-counties.
The man, believed to be aged between 30 and 40, is suspected to have been swept away by the raging waters near Witeithie Dam along the Witeithie–Maraba Road, near Kwa Githoitho in Muhaka area.
The exact circumstances leading to his death remain unclear.
By the time of going to press, police officers from Witeithie Police Station had arrived at the scene and were in the process of retrieving the body for transfer to a local mortuary, as investigations into the incident continue.
The incident comes in the wake of heavy rains that hit the Thika–Juja region on Friday afternoon, causing widespread flooding. Several homes were affected, with some partially submerged in water. Transport was severely disrupted as many roads became impassable and others turned into flowing streams.
Residents and local leaders have raised concern over poor drainage systems and the continued encroachment on natural waterways, which they say is worsening the impact of flash floods.
There are now renewed calls on the county government and other relevant authorities to urgently clear and restore drainage channels and water pathways to allow smooth flow of storm water and prevent future tragedies.
