Thika Water raises alarm over rising theft of sewer manhole covers

Thika Water and Sewerage Company Ltd (THIWASCO) has raised concern over a growing wave of sewer manhole cover thefts in Cravers and surrounding areas, warning that the trend poses serious safety and public health risks.

In a public notice issued this week, the water utility described the situation as alarming, noting that open manholes expose pedestrians, motorists and especially children to grave danger. The company further warned that the thefts are leading to costly repairs and damage to the sewer infrastructure.

“Open manholes are not only hazardous but also contribute significantly to public health risks,” the notice stated.

According to THIWASCO, exposed sewer lines can quickly become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other disease-causing organisms. The situation worsens when garbage and solid waste are disposed of into the open systems, leading to blockages and overflows that create unsanitary conditions in residential areas.

The utility also highlighted the increased risk during rainy seasons, when silt and debris enter the sewer system through uncovered manholes, causing flooding and escalating maintenance costs. In extreme cases, residents may experience sewer backflow into homes, blocked toilets and other serious inconveniences.

THIWASCO Managing Director Eng. Moses Kinya urged members of the public to remain vigilant and proactive in protecting shared infrastructure.

“We appeal to all community members to work with us in safeguarding public infrastructure and maintaining a clean and safe environment. Quick reporting of suspicious activities can help prevent accidents and reduce losses,” he said.

The company has called on residents to report any suspicious activities around water and sewer installations through its customer care numbers, WhatsApp line, social media platforms, community leaders or the nearest police station.

The notice was also copied to churches, mosques, government offices, scrap metal dealers, and Kiambu County offices, signaling a coordinated effort to curb the vice.

THIWASCO emphasised that protecting public infrastructure is a shared responsibility and urged the community to support efforts aimed at ensuring continued safe and efficient service delivery.
