MKU Marks 15 Years Since Charter with Colourful Thanksgiving Service

Mount Kenya University (MKU) on Sunday, February 22, 2026, held a vibrant Thanksgiving Service at the Mwai Kibaki Convention Centre (MKCC) to commemorate 15 years since the institution was awarded its university Charter.

The celebration, organised by the Office of Chaplaincy, brought together students, members of staff, and representatives from various religious groups within the university for a unified moment of gratitude, worship, and reflection. Held on the First Sunday of Lent, the service blended spiritual devotion with celebration under the theme: “Celebrating 15 Years of God’s Faithfulness Since the Charter.”

The atmosphere at MKCC was both reflective and jubilant, with powerful gospel performances from renowned artists Evelyn Wanjiru and SIZE 8 Reborn. Their uplifting music energised the congregation and set the tone for a day dedicated to thanksgiving and spiritual renewal.

MKU Founder and Chairperson of the Board of Directors, Prof. Simon Gicharu, graced the occasion as the chief guest. In his address, he applauded the university community for its resilience and steady growth since attaining charter status.

“Fifteen years ago, we received our Charter with a vision to transform lives through education. Today, we celebrate not just growth in numbers, but growth in impact, character, and service to society,” said Prof. Gicharu. “God has been faithful to this institution, and it is through unity and hard work that we continue to thrive.”

As part of the celebrations, Prof. Gicharu presented critical equipment to various religious groups within the university to support their activities and enhance spiritual engagement across MKU campuses. The gesture was warmly received, symbolising the institution’s commitment to nurturing the spiritual well-being of its community.

The service also featured a sermon by preacher Joseph Nzeketha, who centered his message on gratitude, unity, and the significance of the Lenten season. He urged the university community to embrace reflection and self-examination during the 40-day journey.

“Lent is a season of renewal,” Nzeketha preached. “As we celebrate these 15 years, let us not only count achievements, but also renew our hearts, strengthen our unity, and remain grounded in faith.”

Among those in attendance were MKU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (APIA) Prof. Peter Kirira and other senior university officials, whose presence underscored the importance of the milestone and the collective appreciation for the progress made since the Charter was granted.

The 2026 Thanksgiving Service will be remembered as a significant moment in MKU’s history, a day when the university community paused to reflect on its journey, celebrate its achievements and reaffirm its commitment to academic excellence, faith, and service to society.
