Business and Family Expo Launched: Focus on Legacy, Mentorship and Growth

The much-anticipated Business and Family Expo was officially launched in an event held at Pride Inn Hotel Nairobi with a strong message on the integration of family values and business for sustainable success.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, the Expo’s CEO, Dr. Michael Waweru, underscored the vision behind the event, which he described as a platform to guide families in building enterprises that can outlive generations.

“This Expo is about exploring how family businesses can thrive across generations. It is about providing guidance on handing over leadership to the next generation, emphasizing partnerships as a pathway to success and promoting mentorship programs for our youth,” he said.

He added that Ruiru was deliberately chosen as the host location due to its strategic position, accessibility and vibrant mix of businesses and professionals working in Nairobi.

Dr. Waweru also revealed that the Expo will feature a Legacy Planning Workshop, as well as interactive family-centered activities.

“Unlike other regions, many African parents rarely involve their children in business early enough. Through mentorship, kids’ business activities, and family dialogues, we hope to change that narrative,” he noted.

The three-day event, set for October 3rd to 5th at Ruiru Golf Club, will include:

Day 1 (Oct 3): Opening Ceremony featuring key industry leaders

Day 2 (Oct 4): Exhibitions, networking, and meaningful dialogue for children

Day 3 (Oct 5): Business exhibition and family fun day, including a Kids’ Business Parliament, educational sessions, and panel discussions.

Dr. Mike unveiled three partnership packages — Silver, Gold and Platinum—designed to offer visibility and networking opportunities. These range from Ksh. 30,000 for the Silver Package to premium offerings like mainstream media marketing, executive lounge access and branded visibility for Gold and Platinum partners.

Eng. James Gathage, Founder & CEO of Share Wisdom Ltd and a seasoned family business advisor, delved into the challenges of managing family businesses. Using the biblical example of the prodigal son, he drew parallels to the emotional barriers families often face.

“Family businesses are both physical and emotional. While the technical aspects may be straightforward, emotions are the hardest hurdles. To build lasting legacies, families must strike a balance and engage children beyond academics,” Eng. Gathage explained.

He stressed the need to introduce children to business at the right time, address sibling rivalry constructively and adopt new mindsets when managing family-owned enterprises.

On his part, Dr. Raymond Mutura, Director at Strathmore University’s Centre for Research on Organisations, Work and Family (ROWF), echoed the importance of strengthening family enterprises for economic growth.

“Globally, family businesses drive economies. Here in Africa, about 80% of businesses are family-owned, employing the majority of the workforce. If well-structured, these enterprises can maximize their contribution to GDP and ensure sustainability,” said Dr. Mutura.

The launch wrapped up with a vibrant celebration graced by distinguished guests and CEOs. Participants were formally invited to the main Expo in October, which promises to be a transformative platform for families and businesses seeking to create legacies built on values, mentorship and sustainable growth.
