The search for a construction worker who went missing over a week ago ended in tragedy on Sunday morning after his body was discovered at the Talanta Sports Stadium site in Nairobi.
The deceased, identified as 35-year-old Sammy Kyengo, had been reported missing on September 6. His body was found on September 14 in a water sump located behind the stadium terraces, which are still under construction.
According to witnesses, a fellow worker stumbled upon the body at around 9:00 a.m. while preparing the area for plastering. Kyengo’s remains bore visible injuries on the back of his head and neck, with blood oozing from his nose and mouth, raising suspicions of foul play.
His wife, Christine, revealed that her husband had been frustrated by delayed wages, saying he had not been paid since July. She said he had even considered quitting his job due to the financial strain.
“He was a peaceful man who never had disputes with anyone. We are shocked and in pain because we cannot understand how this happened,” a relative told reporters.
The discovery has left his colleagues shaken, with many expressing concern about safety and working conditions at the site. Investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) visited the scene and later moved the body to the Nairobi Funeral Home for postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Authorities instructed workers not to report to the site on Saturday as investigations continue. The case has also drawn attention to the plight of construction workers, particularly issues of delayed wages and workplace safety.
Police have launched a probe into the incident, with results from the autopsy expected to shed more light on whether Kyengo’s death was accidental or a result of foul play.
