Thika Depot Affordable Housing Project Hits 70% Completion

The Thika Depot Affordable Housing Project, a flagship development under President William Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), is rapidly taking shape, with works now reported to be 70 percent complete.

According to Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Charles Hinga Mwaura, the project, launched in July 2024, marks a major milestone in the government’s push to provide decent, affordable homes while spurring job creation and economic growth.

Rising steadily on the Thika skyline, the development comprises four modern residential blocks: Block A (G+12), Block B1 (G+11), Block B2 (G+11) and Block C (G+10).

Once complete, the estate will deliver 425 housing units, complemented by studio shops and a kindergarten to support the community’s social and commercial needs.

Construction crews are currently working on casting the ninth-floor slab, plastering, formwork and concrete columns. The pace of progress, PS Hinga noted, is not only transforming the physical landscape but also changing lives on the ground.

The project has already created 400 jobs, including opportunities for youth, women, and five specialised professionals, while fuelling the local economy through suppliers, transporters and small businesses who service the site daily.

“This is more than just housing,” the PS said. “It’s about building sustainable communities, empowering Kenyans, and ensuring that the Affordable Housing Programme leaves no one behind.”

Once completed, the Thika Depot project will stand as a beacon of modern urban planning and a model for similar housing schemes across the country.
