Kiambu MCAs Defend Governor Wamatangi Amid EACC Corruption Allegations

A section of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) in Kiambu have come out strongly to defend Governor Kimani Wamatangi following corruption allegations leveled against him by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
Speaking during a press briefing, the MCAs dismissed the accusations as politically motivated and designed to tarnish the governor’s image. They argued that Wamatangi has prioritized accountability and development since assuming office, and urged residents to remain patient as investigations continue.
The defense comes in the wake of a high-profile probe launched by the EACC into alleged irregularities in the award of a Sh230 million Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system tender during the 2022/2023 financial year. Investigators have also linked the governor to questionable payments amounting to Sh1.5 billion, which the anti-graft agency claims were made through fictitious procurement deals.
In April, EACC officials conducted a raid at the governor’s residence where they reportedly recovered Sh12 million in local currency and USD 13,000 in cash. The commission maintains that the funds are suspected proceeds of corruption.
Governor Wamatangi has consistently denied any wrongdoing, insisting that the allegations are baseless and fueled by political enemies seeking to destabilize his administration. His position has now been reinforced by the MCAs, who said the governor deserves the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
Meanwhile, the legal battle surrounding the matter continues. In July, the High Court issued conservatory orders barring both the EACC and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) from arresting or prosecuting the governor until September 18, 2025, when the case is scheduled for mention.
The controversy has also been heightened by separate claims involving land disputes and alleged extortion of investors, which Wamatangi has vehemently denied.
As the investigations progress, the governor’s political survival may largely hinge on both the outcome of the EACC probe and continued support from county leaders and residents.
