Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo Impeached by County Assembly Amid Controversy

Isiolo County impeached Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo

Isiolo Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo was impeached yesterday (Thursday, June 26, 2025) by the Isiolo County Assembly after a dramatic session that saw 16 Members of County Assembly vote in favour of the motion, with two abstaining and none opposing.

The impeachment, which took place despite a court order temporarily halting the process, marks a major political turning point for Isiolo County. Governor Guyo was accused of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and violating the Constitution and various national laws.

The governor was invited to appear before the County Assembly to defend himself but did not attend the session. The MCAs proceeded in his absence, citing provisions in the Standing Orders that allowed them to continue if due notice had been given.

Speaking after the session, Sericho MCA Abubakar Godana who moved the motion said the Assembly acted in the best interest of the people of Isiolo. “This is a historic day for accountability and integrity in leadership. The County Assembly has exercised its constitutional mandate without fear or favour,” he said.

Yesterday’s proceedings were held under tight security, with reports indicating that some MCAs had been in hiding and had previously relocated sittings outside the county over safety concerns. The Assembly had met in Nakuru and Machakos in the days leading up to the vote.

The resolution of impeachment has now been forwarded to the Senate, which is expected to either uphold or overturn the decision in accordance with Article 181 of the Constitution.

Governor Guyo, who was serving his first term, has not issued an official response following the impeachment but is expected to challenge the move through the courts and political avenues.

If upheld by the Senate, the impeachment will result in his removal from office, paving the way for a new leadership transition in Isiolo County.
