PS Elijah Mwangi speaks to the press during the launch of the Kimuchu Sports Academy in Kamenu, Thika West.

Thika West Sub-County is set to become a hub of athletic excellence following the official groundbreaking ceremony of a state of the art Sports Academy at Kimuchu Grounds, Kamenu Ward. The event, held on Monday, was presided over by Principal Secretary in the State Department for Sports, Mr. Elijah Mwangi.

The ambitious Ksh.55 million project aims to uplift local sports and youth development by providing modern sporting facilities, including a football pitch, volleyball, basketball and netball courts, a running track, modern classrooms, and a social hall. The academy is expected to be completed within the next four months.

According to PS Mwangi, this project is part of the government’s broader vision to invest in grassroots sports and empower talented youth through proper training and exposure. He announced that once the facility is operational, experts from the Kenya Academy of Sports (KAS) will be deployed to help identify, mentor, and develop promising athletes from the area.

“This is not just a sports facility, it’s an investment in the future of our young people,” said the PS. “We want to see talent from Thika rise to national and international levels, and this academy will lay the foundation for that journey.”

She expressed her appreciation to the Ministry of Sports for selecting Kamenu for the development and appealed for additional funding to include a swimming pool in the next phase of the academy.

“I’m thankful to the government for this incredible project, but we also request for more resources so we can include a swimming pool to make this academy fully inclusive for all sports disciplines,” said Hon. Alice Ng’ang’a.

Local residents, educators, and sports stakeholders praised the initiative, noting that it will not only nurture athletic talent but also create much needed employment opportunities.

The new academy is expected to serve as a vital space for talent development, social engagement, and community pride, marking a major milestone in the transformation of Kamenu Ward and the wider Thika West Sub-County.
