Young Man Drowns In A Dam Near Witeithie Estate.

Authorities in Thika are investigating an apparent drowning that occurred Sunday morning in a dam near Witeithie Estate, Juja Sub-County of Kiambu County.

Ndung'u a.k.a. Gatheru, who was in his at his late 20s, drowned at around 11:30am after what friends say was an attempt to swim across that mass of water.

Its alleged that he and his two friends had just finished washing a car before he decided to swim as a way of refreshing himself. He is said to have first used a boat that was always placed at the dam by a certain trader who earned a living by ferrying people through the dam for leisure.

According to his friends' account, it was while inside the dam that Gatheru took pride in his swimming prowess and jumped into the deep waters. A few minutes later, his friends sensed that things were not right. Their was friend was actually drowning.

They immediately raised alarm and people stormed in their numbers to save him but it was too late. They commenced an emergency search for his body which had already sank. 

Soon, they were joined by the police and a team from Thika Fire & Rescue Emergency Responders. 

His lifeless body was recovered about four hours later.

Witnesses told police that Gatheru was a bit tipsy before the incident, having taken some tots of liquor earlier in the morning.

Macharia Kamau, a local politician and who was among those who led in the operation, stressed the need for the youth in the area to always take precautions to guard themselves and their loved ones when enjoying outdoor recreation especially in such life threatening situations. He also pleaded with them to be wary of uncontrolled drinking habits.

"Mixing alcohol with waterways, whether swimming or boating, is a particularly dangerous practice. We'll know more about the cause of Gatheru's death but let us use this tragedy to remind our citizens about these risks," said Macharia.
 
Until his tragic demise, the young man worked as a potter at his brother's hardware shop based in Witeithie Estate.

His body is lying at General Kago Funeral Home in Thika Town.
