Kenya Power Mourns Staff Member Killed While on Duty
Kenya Power is mourning the tragic death of its staff member, Shadrack Matembo, who succumbed to injuries after being attacked while on duty in the Checheles area near Isiolo town.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Thursday when Matembo was part of a field team undertaking routine operations in the area. In the course of his duties, he moved to disconnect an illegal electricity connection, an enforcement action that is often fraught with risk.
It is at this point that he was attacked by an assailant, sustaining serious injuries. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment before being airlifted to Nairobi for specialised care. Despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life, Matembo later succumbed to his injuries.
In a statement, Kenya Power expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Matembo as a dedicated and committed employee who died while serving the public.
“This is a painful loss not only to the family but also to the entire Kenya Power fraternity. We have lost a committed staff member who was diligently executing his mandate,” the company said.
The utility firm confirmed that it is working closely with security agencies to investigate the incident, noting that the assailant behind the attack remains at large. Authorities have since launched a manhunt as efforts intensify to bring the suspect to justice.
The tragic incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by utility workers, especially those involved in enforcement operations such as disconnecting illegal power connections. Kenya Power has called for enhanced protection for its staff and greater cooperation from the public to ensure their safety while delivering essential services.
As investigations continue, colleagues and stakeholders have joined the family in mourning Matembo, remembering him for his dedication, courage and service to the nation.
