Thika Water and Sewerage Company (THIWASCO) Managing Director Eng. Dr. Moses Kinya.

The Thika Water and Sewerage Company (THIWASCO) has announced an Optimised Water Distribution Programme set to take effect from February 9, 2026, introducing a structured area-based water rationing schedule across Thika and its surrounding regions.

Why the Rationing Has Been Introduced

THIWASCO says the rationing has been necessitated by persistent dry weather and rapid urban growth, which have caused water demand to exceed the company’s current production capacity.

“The Optimised Water Distribution Programme is aimed at ensuring equitable supply across all service areas during this challenging period,” the company said.

Customers have been urged to conserve water through the following measures:

• Promptly fixing leaks within premise

• Turning off taps when not in us

• Taking shorter shower

• Running washing machines only with full loads

• Installing water-efficient fixtures

• Harvesting and using rainwater for outdoor purposes

• Immediate ban on car washing and watering of gardens using treated water

Residents have also been asked to help protect water infrastructure by reporting:

• Leakages and pipe bursts

• Vandalism of water facilities

• Suspected illegal or unmetered connections

• Stalled, tampered or non-functional meters

Reporting Channels:
Customer Care: 0720 418 444 | 0800 724 948 (Toll-Free)

THIWASCO noted that customers with stalled or faulty meters should report promptly for inspection and replacement at no cost, in line with company procedures.

To cushion customers during rationing periods, THIWASCO is offering water through its bowsers at approved tariffs:
