Mombasa — Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested two suspects and recovered a loaded AK-47 rifle following a robbery and abduction incident involving a businessman in Kisauni on February 17, 2026.
The suspects, identified as Timothy Omondi Mgowe (23) and Collins Ochieng alias “Voke” (22), were apprehended after an intelligence-led operation conducted by officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau and the DCI Operations Directorate. The two were traced to a hideout in the Bamburi area, where detectives mounted a raid that led to their arrest.
According to investigators, the victim, a local businessman, was accosted by armed and masked assailants who robbed him of cash and valuables before abducting him. He was later abandoned in a different location within Mombasa County, shaken but alive.
During the operation, detectives recovered an AK-47 rifle loaded with four rounds of ammunition, along with several mobile phones suspected to have been used in coordinating the crime and other possible criminal activities. The firearm has been taken for ballistic analysis as part of ongoing investigations.
Police believe the arrests are a major breakthrough in efforts to dismantle criminal networks behind violent robberies and abductions in the Coast region. Security agencies have in recent months intensified operations targeting gangs suspected of using illegal firearms to terrorise residents and business operators.
Authorities have assured the public that the crackdown will continue and urged residents to share information that could help in tracking down other suspects who may be linked to the incident. The two suspects remain in custody and are expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
The incident had raised concern among members of the local business community, who have called for enhanced security and stronger enforcement to curb the rising cases of violent crime. Police say the recovery of the high-powered weapon underscores the importance of intelligence-driven operations in preventing further attacks and improving public safety in the region.
