Viewing of Raila Odinga’s Body at Kasarani Resumes After Chaotic Disruption

A solemn moment at Kasarani Stadium as leaders and Kenyans pay their final respects to the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga the father of Kenya’s democracy and a true Pan-African statesman. 

 The public viewing of the body of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga at Kasarani Stadium has resumed after a brief but chaotic disruption earlier today.

The incident occurred in the afternoon when large crowds, eager to catch a final glimpse of the late ODM leader, tried to force their way into restricted sections of the stadium. The situation quickly turned chaotic as some mourners began throwing chairs and stones toward security officers manning the VIP area where Raila’s body lay in state.

Police were forced to intervene, firing warning shots and tear gas to disperse the rowdy crowd. The commotion caused a temporary suspension of the viewing exercise as authorities restored order and secured the venue.

Eyewitnesses reported moments of panic as mourners scrambled for safety. Some people were injured during the scuffle, with reports indicating that at least two individuals sustained gunshot wounds as police tried to control the situation.

The viewing resumed after calm was restored, with thousands of Kenyans continuing to stream into Kasarani to pay their last respects to the man widely regarded as the father of Kenya’s democracy.

Among those who visited the venue to honour Raila’s memory were President William Ruto, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, and a host of national and county leaders from across the political divide.

The government has since assured Kenyans of enhanced security and a more coordinated process to allow mourners to pay their respects peacefully.

The viewing at Kasarani is part of a series of national events leading up to Raila Odinga’s burial on Sunday, October 19, in accordance with his wishes to be laid to rest within 72 hours of his passing.

Raila’s death on Wednesday, October 15, at the age of 80, has plunged the country into mourning, with tributes pouring in from leaders and citizens alike, remembering him as a visionary statesman, liberation hero, and Pan-African icon whose legacy will endure for generations.
