MP Alice Ng’ang’a Issues Bursaries and Empowers Groups in Thika Town West

Thika Town Member of Parliament Alice Ng’ang’a has once again demonstrated her commitment to education and grassroots empowerment by issuing bursaries to thousands of students and supporting local self-help groups during a community event held at the Chania Boys High School grounds.

Speaking passionately during the event, MP Alice Ng’ang’a affirmed that no child should be denied the right to education due to financial hardship. She announced that her office had disbursed bursaries to over 3,800 students drawn from both secondary and tertiary institutions, with a total allocation exceeding KSh18 million. Among the beneficiaries were students from institutions such as Chania Boys High School, Chania Girls High School, Thika Special School, and numerous day secondary schools within Hospital and Township wards. She noted that education is the foundation of her leadership agenda and pledged to continue supporting students at all levels.

Students in universities and colleges were also included in the bursary program. Beneficiaries included those studying at Kenyatta University, Mount Kenya University, JKUAT, and Thika Technical Training Institute. MP Alice Ng’ang’a singled out the technical college for special praise, revealing that over 500 students from the institution received KSh2.5 million in support. She added that strengthening technical and vocational training remains a key focus of her leadership, and mentioned plans for further development at Umoja Technical School, which is expected to offer skills training and new opportunities for youth across the constituency.

In her address, she underscored the importance of these efforts, stating: “Our children are our greatest investment. No parent should be forced to choose between feeding their family and educating their child. That is why we are here to ensure every learner, no matter their background, has the chance to dream and achieve.”

In addition to bursaries, the event also marked the distribution of financial support to local empowerment groups. Several self-help groups from Hospital and Township wards were awarded funds to expand their businesses and boost economic activities. The MP emphasized that this initiative is meant to create sustainable livelihoods and reduce dependency by encouraging entrepreneurship among women, youth, and grassroots organizations. Among the groups that benefited were youth development groups, women’s table banking groups, and small traders’ cooperatives. She encouraged the beneficiaries to use the funds responsibly and assured them that her office would continue to support initiatives that bring real change to the lives of ordinary residents.

MP Alice Ng’ang’a also took time to appreciate the support of teachers, parents, and local leaders who have helped push the education agenda forward. She acknowledged the challenges facing many schools due to increased enrollment, particularly following the 100% transition policy, and noted that through the NG-CDF, her office has continued to invest in infrastructure. Chania Boys High School, for instance, has benefited from the construction of new classrooms, an administration block, and a library to accommodate the growing student population.

Her speech and actions on the day reflected a deep commitment to inclusive development one that places education, empowerment, and community well-being at the heart of service. The bursary and empowerment program not only lightens the burden on struggling families but also strengthens the foundation for a more self-reliant and prosperous Thika Town Constituency.
