Gov. Wamatangi gazettes team to determine Thika City Status


Governor Kimani Wamatangi has gazetted Adhoc Committees to oversee the elevation of various town centres within Kiambu County into Municipalities and City status.

Among urban centres earmarked for elevation include Thika Municipality which is being separated from Juja to become an Industrial Smart City.

Others include Juja which is being proposed to be a municipality hived from Thika Municipality, Gatundu, Githurai (Kahawa), Kabete and Githunguri.

If successful, this will bring to eleven (11) the number of municipalities in Kiambu County. Already, the county has six municipalities in 2018. They include Kiambu, Limuru, Thika, Ruiru, Kikuyu and Karuri.

Kimende on the other hand has been propose to be elevated to a Town status.

The following persons have been appointed to the adhoc Committee to consider, determine that Municipality of Thika meets the requisite criteria for classification as a city:-

1. Sylviah Mueni Kasanga – Architects Association of Kenya

2. Daniel Gachau Mwangi – Law Society of Kenya

3. Kinuthia Wamwangi – Association of Urban Areas and Cities

4. Eunice Kumunga Muthoni – Kenya Institute of Planners

5. Daniel Mwaura Kimiri – Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya

6. Lilian Njeri Njehia – Institute of Surveyors of Kenya

7. Barham Dev Vasisht (Dr.) – Business Community

This committee shall advise and make recommendation for the conferment of City status to the Municipality of Thika, for a period of one (1) year, with effect from the 1st November, 2022.

  2. It would be wise to add a regular citizen to the community. Someone who knows the corners of the town.

  3. I wish the committee given the mandate well. Thika town is already passed the status of a municipality and deserves to be upgraded. However public participation is required to educate the community and inhabitants of Thika town of the impact or benefits that will impact on them upon the upgrading of the town.
