Gakuyo presents self to the DCI over Ekeza Sacco sh. 1.5b scandal.
Ekeza Sacco Chairman
David Kariuki Ngare (Gakuyo) on Thursday presented himself to the Directorate
of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to answer claims of Sh1.5 billion scandal that
has rocked the sacco.
While in the company
of his lawyer Danstan Omari and six other Ekeza Sacco officials, Gakuyo
appeared at the DCI headquarters at 2pm with reports indicating that they were
questioned for about half an hour by officers including Head of Serious Crimes
Unit Joseph Kariuki.
Addressing the press,
Lawyer Omari said the DCI confirmed that there was only one complaint against
the televangelist from the Ministry of Trade with the DCI informing Gakuyo’s
defence team about it only five minutes before they arrived at the
headquarters.
“As his defence team, we are yet to read the document but we are prepared, ready and willing at no extra cost to defend the rights of our client. The country must operate within the rule of law. It cannot operate by character assassination,” said Omari.
These new developments come barely a day after Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i instructed police to speed up the arrest of Ekeza Sacco officials, where Gakuyo is the chairman.
Matiang’i, who spoke during the Police Sacco’s AGM in Nairobi on Tuesday, said: “It is true, there is nothing to hide … we are hot on the trail of officials of Ekeza and the others. We will have no mercy … we have agreed with the inspector-general (of police) to go after these people and make them face the law.”
