CLOSE THIKA LEATHER INDUSTRY, CDF REP SAYS

Lucy Mwangi, a Thika CDF committee member in charge of environment is calling on the closure of Leather Industries of Kenya claiming that it poses health risks to residents.

Mwangi, who was representing Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a during a cleanup of Gachagi and Matharau slums by CDF and youth volunteers said the tannery should not operate in a populated residential area because of its effluent smell. She said the Kiambu government has failed in its role of securing a safe environment.

“The tannery, which has been in existence for more than 50 years, should be moved to an area which is not inhabited by human beings.” she said.

The tannery borders Gacagi Slum and opposite Kisii Estate, two densily populated areas along Thika-Garissa Road.
