The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Thika branch chairman Joe Mungai has welcomed the Supreme Court’s ruling over the teachers' pay rise. Mungai termed the ruling that was delivered by the court on Monday afternoon as bold and fair to Kenyan teachers.

"The endless court battles are now over and the national government can no longer buy time in courts. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has no other option but to increase teachers’ salaries between 50 to 60 per cent as directed in June by the Industrial Court,” said Mungai.

He added that teachers expect nothing less of the said salary increase at the end of this month failure to which they will make their threat of downing their tools come September real.

"No more negotiations with the government. TSC has lost in the court process and justice is all we want," he added.

The chairman noted that teachers have been sidelined and paid poorly for many years and it is now their time to enjoy the fruits of their labour.
