Police in
Thika are holding 9 men of Nigerian
origin who were arrested on Sunday evening at Kang’oki area of Makongeni
Division in Thika.
It is
alleged that the nine, aged between 20 and 28 years of age, were rounded up by
curious members of public who got concerned about their suspicious mission at a
secluded bushy area in Kang’oki. Upon search, they were found in possession of
crude weapons which the residents suspected were meant to cause harm in a yet
to be established mission.
When these
foreigners failed to convincingly explain their mission, the irate mob pounced
on them with all manner of crude weapons, injuring them seriously.
They were rescued
by officers from Makongeni Police Station who took them to hospital for
treatment. 8 of them were treated and discharged while one was admitted at
Thika Level 5 Hospital with serious fractures on his right lower limbs.
Confirming
the incident, Thika West Sub-County Police Commander Daniel Kinyua said that Makongeni
Police received a report that some foreigners had been subjected to mob justice
at Kang’oki area and upon arrival, they found the suspects in possession of 4
knives and an axe.
“Upon search,
they were found to bear no legal documentation allowing them to be in the
country. Preliminary investigations also revealed that none of them resides in
Thika and we suspect that they might be hosted by someone around this place. We
have not yet established their mission but we have arraigned them in court on
charges of being in the country without the requisite documentation and being
in possession of dangerous weapons with intent to commit a felony,” explained
the OCPD.
The 9 have
been remanded for 14 days to allow the police to complete investigations.
