Nyeri Governor passes on at Thika Hospital after grisly accident.
Nyeri Governor Dr. Wahome Gakuru is DEAD!
Gakuru succumbed to injuries at the Thika Level 5 Hospital
while undergoing emergency treatment following a grisly road accident along
Nyeri-Nairobi Highway between Kabati and Makenji Trading Centres.
While breaking the sad news, Murang'a county commissioner Mr. John Elung'ata said that the accident occurred at around
6:45am as the governor was heading to Nairobi.
It is alleged that one of the vehicle’s tires burst, causing
it to lose control and hit a guardrail on the side of the road.
“The rail cut through the vehicle, fatally injuring the
governor and other occupants who were travelling along with him. He was retrieved
from the wreckage by members of the public who immediately rushed him and his
staff to Thika Level 5 Hospital,” explained Elung’ata.
He later succumbed to his injuries while being treated at
the hospital.
Eyewitness account indicate that the governor got trapped in
the vehicle and the public had to use axes and other crude weapons to retrieve
him from the mangled vehicle.
The governor's car had four occupants at the time of the
crash— him, his personal assistant Albert Kiguru, his body guard Ahmed Abdi and
the driver Samuel Kinyanjui Wanyaga.
The personal assistant’s right hand and leg broken are
broken and police were still looking for his wrist at the scene of the crash. The
bodyguard's legs were seriously injured while the driver is okay.
The PA and bodyguard have been transferred to a Nairobi
Hospital for specialised treatment. The driver was said to have incurred some
minor injuries.
The accident scene is a black spot especially during wet
weather as this part of the road gets so slippery. The commissioner is
therefore warning motorists to be extra careful while driving along that part
of the highway as it has claimed so many lives.
