Thika residents woke up Sunday morning with the sad news of
the demise of Eliud Muchiri Gathangira aka ‘Santos’ who died in a grisly
accident along the busy Thika Superhighway.
Santos died after his saloon car hit a stalled pick-up and
swerved off the motorway and smashed into a trench just opposite the Juja
Police Station.
According to eyewitness reports, a pick-up carrying avocados
had earlier been involved in an accident and efforts to get it off the road
were underway. At around 2:35am, Santos’ car, which was said to be speeding,
suddenly bumped into an unexpected stalled vehicle in the middle of the runway
and in an effort to avoid ramming onto the pick-up, he swerved his car sideways
but lost control of it after it drove on the avocado that had spilled on the
road.
It is alleged that his vehicle swayed and hit the pick-up on
the side before his car flying off the road to crash land on the concrete
drainage trench, extensively damaging the car. Muchiri was sandwiched in the
wreckage and died in the process of being retrieved from the metals. It took
the efforts of a breakdown and the members of the public to untrap him from the
wreck.
His body was taken to Thika’s General Kago Funeral Home and
later transferred by friends and relatives to the Kenyatta University Funeral
Home in preparation for his final send off at their rural home in Nyeri County.
Sources close to him say that Muchiri had just left Thika
Town and was heading to his home in Kahawa when he met his death.
He was a staunch supporter and a dedicated aide to Thika
Town MP Alice Wambui Ng’ang’a who he laid his life for at all times. He is also
a known figure in the matatu industry, having been in the management of the
Nairobi’s “Nganya” route for quite some time.
Santos, as he was popularly known, was a very friendly and
jovial chap who made friends with ease. The news of his demise drew a dark
cloud in Thika and environs where he was well known. Messages of condolences to
his family and friends jammed social media platforms, majority of which bid
their ‘Fare Thee Well’ to the departed hero.
Friends and relatives will be meeting at the Coconut Grill
Hotel every evening starting this Monday for burial arrangements. According to
family sources, the burial is scheduled for Monday the 10th October
2016 (subject to official confirmation).
Fare Thee Well
Santos.
We loved you but God
loved you the more.
Till we meet again in
internal glory. Amen!
