Thika Sub-County Stadium has finally been cleared to host league matches by Kenya Premier League (KPL) officials. This comes after the rehabilitation and upgrading of the stadium that has been ongoing and funded by Kiambu County Government through the Department of Youth Affairs, Sports and Communication.

Thika Stadium has been serving as the home-ground for Thika United FC who for the last two seasons have been forced to get another venue for home matches due to poor playing surface. In 2013, a number of KPL teams complained about the facility which seemed to deteriorate every year. KPL Stadiums Committee later that year visited and assessed all the venues listed by teams for their home matches that season and forwarded their findings to the league office.

Yesterday, KPL officials approved its use after conducting a thorough inspection of the facility and the rehabilitation works by the County Government of Kiambu through the Department of Youth Affairs, Sports and Communication. The KPL officials said that the stadium is currently among the safest in Kenya in terms of security because of the razor wire that surrounds it.

Thika United FC will kick off their 2016 league campaign by hosting Tusker FC this Saturday 13th February at 3:00 pm.

The Stadium, located in just next to the Bus stage, is based at the heart of the industrial and commercial town of Thika, Kiambu County, about 40 km North East of Nairobi. This is a multi-use stadium but is mostly used for football matches. The stadium holds a capacity of 5,000 people.

The stadium also plays host to Thika RFC, the former Nationwide League Champions who last year made a return to top flight rugby, for the first time in 38 years.
