Thika Region Successful 'Wings To Fly' Applicants Flagged off To Kasarani.

Jubilant students who successfully qualified for the Equity '2016 Wings To Fly' scholarship were on Monday joined by family members and friends as they celebrated outside Equity Bank, Kenyatta Highway Branch during the #WingsToFly flag off for Thika Region. The students were seen off by the Kiambu County Executive for Education, Culture and Social Services, Mrs. Esther Wanjiru Ndirangu, to the Moi International Sports Center - Kasarani Stadium for their induction and subsequent commissioning of their scholarship program.

Speaking at the occasion, Mrs. Ndirangu advised them to treasure this golden opportunity Equity Bank Foundation had accorded adding that so many other needy children were dropping out of school for lack o f fees. She advised them to work smart whenever they went and to choose their friends wisely since from then henceforth they had become agents of change.

She appealed to their parents not to fold their hands now that Equity had taken the initiative to be guardian saying that they still had a big role to play.

Thika Branch Equity Senior Business Growth & Development Manager Mr. Sammy Karanu took the opportunity to congratulate the successful applicants. He also thanked their parents for the cooperation they accorded the team from the District Scholarship Selection Boards (DSSB) as they conducted the rigorous selection exercise.

Out of the 250 deserving cases drawn from primary schools in Thika East and West Districts that had applied, only 15 students from each of these two sub-counties made it. Each of these students will benefit from a comprehensive scholarship that will include tuition fees, books & stationary, uniform, transport, personal effects and pocket money.


2,000 students from across the country have begun their journey to success. The #‎WingsToFly‬ cohort to the induction course will kick start this journey through mentorship programme from outstanding role models.

Among the successful applicants was Master Brian Maina, the boy fro Kiandutu Slum we had highlighted in an earlier story and another former street boy, Brian Ngatia.

The ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Education led by Madams Dorcas Njoroge and Grace Njoroge, Thika Town Constituency C.D.F. officials as well as senior staff from all the Equity Bank Thika Region Branches.
