THIKA STADIUM TO BE RENOVATED AND SITTING CAPACITY INCREASED TO 8000
Kiambu
County plans to expand Thika
Sub-County Stadium from its current sitting capacity of 2000 to 8000 people. This initiative, according to County Executive Chair Youth Affairs and Sports, Machel Waikenda
will transform sports in the county.
Waikenda
who spoke on Friday averred that the ministry is
bent on enhancing sports through refurbishment of existing facilities.
“Sports
in Kiambu are rife and we have embarked on mission to make sure that all facilities
aiding them are in good condition while we build others,” he said.
The
county government of Kiambu has set aside Sh60 million which will be used in
renovating sports grounds across the sixty wards in Kiambu County.
“Every
ward has been allocated sh1 million which will be used to renovate the sports
ground in that particular ward as a way to tap talent and also nurture sports
in the county,” he said.
Also,
the county government will construct basket ball courts across the region in
tapping sports talents.
Waikenda
urged other stakeholders to support sports in the county saying that many teams
in football have been hampered by lack of funds.
He said
that they rely on the county government for financial support but at times, the
funds are not enough to support all the teams.
